Lymphatic Drainage Massage
What is lymphatic drainage?
Lymphatic drainage originated in the 1930s with Danish husband and wife Dr Emil Vodder, PhD, and Dr Estrid Vodder, ND, who proposed an alternative medicine practice of lymphology. It is a massage technique to improve the functioning of the lymphatic system, using gentle, rhythmic movements of the skin to stimulate contraction of lymphatic vessels. By doing this, metabolic waste products and excess fluid can be removed from the body’s tissues and enter the lymphatic system, then travel through the lymph nodes, where they will be cleansed of dead cells, bacteria and waste products. Clean lymph is then returned to the bloodstream.
The treatment is performed using gentle, rhythmic skin movements to stimulate lymphatic vessel contraction. A well-functioning lymphatic system plays an important role in protecting the body against infection, helps and encourages healthy body tissue and speeds up the flow of lymph along vessels towards the nodes, thereby increasing the drainage of tissue fluid.
The list of the benefits of lymphatic drainage are exhaustive, but here are a few:
